Activists report shelling of Hama and areas near Syrian capital

INTERNATIONAL NEWS - The Syrian military shelled the restive central province of Hama for a second day Thursday, opposition activists said, noting that more than 50 people had been killed the day before.

Residential areas of Hama were targeted in the shelling and the military also shelled the areas of Harasta and Douma near the Syrian capital Damascus, the activists said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

In the northern province of Idlib near the border with Turkey, security forces rounded up an unspecified number of people, the opposition said.

The violence in Syria has prompted French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe to urge for a faster deployment of United Nations observers to monitor the shaky ceasefire in effect since April 12.

"This cannot continue indefinitely. We want to see observers in sufficient numbers, at least 300, deployed as quickly as possible," Juppe said.

The truce is part of a plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to end 13 months of bloodshed in Syria.

The UN Security Council last week passed a resolution to increase the number of observers to 300 in Syria. Only 10 monitors are currently in the country.
